Americana in a bad neighborhood

There’s a fine line between a scuzzy motel and a piece of Americana. In Stockton, there’s quite a bit of “Americana,” though most refer to it as Wilson Way, the ghetto, or as the place white people don’t like to go. I’ve always loved the clunky old signs lining Wilson Way. After an assignment the other day, I pulled over and got a couple shots of a motel and Chinese food restaurant from my car window.

The El Rancho Motel is on Highway 99 in Stockton and I’ve always wanted to shoot it. I’m sure this isn’t the last time.
